CE Course Description

Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among adolescents and young adults, necessitating a specialized and evidence-based approach to risk assessment, intervention, and prevention. This course is designed for psychologists working with youth populations and focuses on identifying, assessing, and managing complex suicide risk factors. Participants will learn to use advanced suicide risk assessment tools, implement evidence-based prevention strategies, engage families and support systems, integrate trauma-informed care, and navigate ethical and legal challenges. This course is based on current empirical research, providing psychologists with the most up-to-date tools and best practices for suicide prevention.

CE Course Objectives

  1. Identify and assess complex suicide risk factors in youth by recognizing developmental, environmental, and trauma-related contributors using evidence-based assessment tools.
  2. Implement evidence-based suicide prevention strategies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CBT-SP) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A), to tailor interventions to individual youth.
  3. Develop strategies to engage families, schools, and community resources in a collaborative approach to suicide prevention and ongoing support for at-risk youth.
  4. Integrate trauma-informed care principles into suicide risk assessment and intervention to ensure sensitivity to the youth’s history and experiences of trauma.
  5. Provide cultural and individual diversity-based clinical care to individuals experiencing suicide risk factors
  6. Navigate the legal and ethical considerations of youth suicide risk management, including confidentiality, mandatory reporting, and ensuring safety while adhering to professional and legal guidelines.
