CE Course Description

Licensed clinical psychologists are increasingly encountering artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that record, transcribe, summarize, and generate psychotherapy progress notes as part of routine clinical practice.  These tools offer potential benefits such as improved documentation efficiency, reduced administrative burden, and increased clinician time for direct patient care. At the same time, the use of AI in psychotherapy raises significant ethical, legal, clinical, and professional concerns related to confidentiality, informed consent, data security, documentation accuracy, algorithmic bias, and the therapeutic alliance. Psychologists must understand both the opportunities and risks associated with these technologies to ensure that their use remains consistent with APA ethical standards, HIPAA requirements, state regulations, and evidence-based clinical practice. This course provides psychologists with a comprehensive overview of AI-assisted session transcription and automated progress note generation. The course examines ethical and legal frameworks, explores clinical implications, reviews best practices for implementation, and discusses strategies for maintaining competence as technology evolves. Emphasis is placed on protecting client privacy, maintaining documentation integrity, minimizing bias, and preserving therapeutic relationships while integrating AI tools into clinical workflows. This course is designed in accordance with APA continuing education standards and incorporates current peer-reviewed literature, applied clinical examples, ethical analysis, and practical implementation strategies relevant to professional psychological practice.
